Chromebooks are low-spec laptops -- equivalent to a high end laptop from ~5-6 years ago. They run Linux and current desktop environments quite well.
As a development platform, or to run GIMP or Blender or Audacity, even Eclipse...Chromebooks are totally capable, and their cost brings access to these kinds of tools to people who couldn't or wouldn't otherwise have them.
I know a bunch of people who play Minecraft with no complaints, I've heard reports that (at least) several Steam games also work fine.
But running new release games on low-spec laptops has never worked well. High-spec gaming on Linux is a fairly recent development anyway, I suppose many of us have never added it to our expectations.
